SRH Break IPL 2026 Powerplay Record as Travis Head Goes Ballistic

SRH

A Powerplay Like No Other

If there was any doubt about Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s place among the most explosive batting teams in IPL 2026, Thursday’s performance against Lucknow Super Giants erased it completely. SRH scored 98 runs in the powerplay, a new record for the highest powerplay total in IPL history, surpassing the previous best of 92. Travis Head was the primary architect of the carnage, reaching his half century off just 15 deliveries before being dismissed for 77 off 28 balls. SRH went on to post 231/4, a total that proved far too many for LSG to chase.

Travis Head: The Most Dangerous Opener in T20 Cricket

The Australian left-hander has been a revelation since joining SRH ahead of IPL 2024, and his performances in IPL 2026 have taken his game to another level entirely. He has now scored 485 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 196, numbers that are almost impossible to comprehend in the context of any form of cricket, let alone a tournament where the world’s best bowlers are competing.

Against LSG, Head batted as if the match situation carried zero consequence. He hit the third ball of the game for a six over midwicket, then followed it up with a driven four through the covers in the same over. By the end of the first over, SRH had scored 22 runs.

Mohsin Khan, who had been LSG’s most reliable bowler earlier in the season, looked completely lost trying to stop Head. He was hit for three consecutive sixes in the third over, a moment that effectively signaled what kind of evening this was going to be for LSG.

Abhishek Sharma Plays the Perfect Foil

Abhishek Sharma, batting alongside Head, was the calmer presence at the other end, though his 44 off 22 balls would have been considered explosive in any other context. Together, the two left-handers put on 98 runs in the powerplay, rotating the strike when needed and targeting every bowler without discrimination.

Abhishek’s timing through the off side was particularly impressive. He hit three fours in a single over from Nicholas Pooran’s part-time spin that suggested complete comfort at the crease against any type of bowling.

The Middle and Death Overs

After Head’s dismissal, SRH lost two wickets in quick succession, which briefly made it look like LSG might get back into the contest. But Heinrich Klaasen walked out in the ninth over and completely demolished that hope. He hit his first ball for a six and never really slowed down, finishing with an unbeaten 64 off 33 balls to push SRH past 230.

The death overs produced 61 runs in the last five, an astonishing rate that left the LSG bowlers looking shell-shocked. The franchise used all eight bowling options in the match, a sign of desperation that underlined just how little they could do to stop the SRH run machine.

LSG’s Chase Falls Short by 68 Runs

Lucknow Super Giants tried their best in the chase. Nicholas Pooran’s 54 gave them some hope in the middle overs, and there were brief periods when they were on track. But 231 was always going to be a mountain too high, particularly after the dismissal of their captain Rishabh Pant, who was run out for 31 in the eleventh over following a moment of poor communication with his partner.

LSG finished on 163/7, a total that would have been competitive in most IPL 2026 matches but was ultimately insufficient by a large margin.

What This Result Means

SRH now sit in third place on the IPL 2026 points table with a strong net run rate that could prove crucial if they end the league stage on equal points with other teams. Their batting average over the season stands at 194 runs per match, easily the highest in the competition.

The concern for SRH, as it has been throughout the tournament, is their bowling. They conceded 163 runs against a team that was chasing 231. If they face a team with a stronger batting lineup in the knockout stages, controlling the run rate in the second innings could be a challenge.

For now, though, SRH are looking like serious contenders, and a powerplay record that may stand for many seasons is a remarkable way to make that point.
