IPL 2026 Playoff Race: How the Top Four Looks Right Now
With the IPL 2026 league stage past its midpoint and the playoff schedule officially confirmed, things are getting interesting at both ends of the points table. The race for the top four has never been tighter, and several teams are still genuinely in the conversation heading into the final stretch of matches.
SRH lead the way but nothing is settled – IPL 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s win over Punjab Kings on Wednesday pushed them to the top of the table, overtaking a Punjab side that had led for much of the season. SRH have been one of the most complete teams in this edition, combining explosive batting from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen with an improving bowling unit led by Eshan Malinga and his 16 wickets.
Pat Cummins’s captaincy has been a quiet but important factor. His tactical awareness in setting fields and rotating bowlers has given SRH a disciplined structure that other teams in the top half have not always managed consistently. They look well placed to reach the playoffs and possibly the top two, which would give them two opportunities to reach the final.
Punjab Kings still in the top half despite their stumble – IPL 2026
Despite three consecutive defeats, Punjab Kings remain in the top half of the table with 13 points from nine matches. Shreyas Iyer will be frustrated, but there is still enough quality in this squad to make a strong push. The batting has been unpredictable and the fielding has cost them matches, with dropped catches at key moments proving expensive against SRH, DC and others.
Cooper Connolly has been a genuine find this season. His century against SRH in the most recent match, coming in a losing cause, highlighted both his ability and the story of PBKS’s season so far. Talent is there, but the team execution has not been consistent enough.
RCB and the other contenders in tight pursuit – IPL 2026
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are right in the thick of it with 12 points from nine games, sitting alongside Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans in what amounts to a four-way battle for the remaining playoff spots behind SRH and PBKS. RCB’s win against LSG tonight, if it comes, would take them to 14 points and into an extremely strong position.
Rajasthan Royals have been another team that has delivered a solid season overall. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 404 runs at the top of the order has been a genuine highlight of IPL 2026, and the bowling attack with Jofra Archer in the mix is always a threat. GT have been consistent without being spectacular, and Kagiso Rabada’s 16 wickets give them an always-dangerous bowling edge.
The teams still fighting to stay alive – IPL 2026
CSK, despite their win over DC, sit at 10 points and have some ground to make up. Their talent is undeniable, but the inconsistency earlier in the season has left them needing a strong run of results. KKR and DC are further back and would need significant help from other results to reach the playoffs at this stage.
LSG, MI and the bottom half teams are essentially playing for pride at this point, though both those sides have shown they can upset anyone on their day. Rohit Sharma’s return has given MI a psychological boost, but the points gap is too large to bridge realistically.
Playoff format and what each team needs -IPL 2026
The IPL 2026 playoffs will be held from late May onwards, with the Qualifier 1 at HPCA Stadium, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, and the final at Narendra Modi Stadium. The top two teams after the league stage go into Qualifier 1 and have two chances to reach the final. The third and fourth-placed sides meet in the Eliminator, giving them one shot to stay alive.
That format makes the race for a top-two finish particularly valuable, and it explains why RCB and SRH are pushing so hard with every game remaining. For the teams in third and fourth, it is a one-match knockout from the Eliminator onwards, which is a very different kind of pressure.
The next week of matches will be decisive. Every team in the top five knows that a slip-up against a lower-ranked side could cost them dearly when the final points table is drawn up.
