5 Explosive Reasons Rohit Sharma’s 84 Powered MI To Record Wankhede Chase

Rohit Sharma

There are few sights in cricket quite like Rohit Sharma in full flow at the Wankhede Stadium, and on Monday night the Mumbai Indians captain delivered one of those innings that reminds you exactly why Rohit Sharma remains one of the most beloved players in the history of the IPL. His 84 off 44 balls, coming on his return from a hamstring injury, guided MI to their biggest ever successful chase at their home ground.

The return everyone was waiting for

Rohit Sharma had been out of action for several weeks after picking up the hamstring problem, and Rohit Sharma absence had hurt Mumbai badly during a run of four defeats in their previous five matches. When he was confirmed in the squad to face Lucknow Super Giants, there was genuine excitement around the Wankhede. He did not disappoint.

Walking out to loud cheers in just the second over after a powerplay that had already set a strong tone, Rohit Sharma looked immediately comfortable. He punished anything short and used his feet beautifully against the spinners. In the sixth over he smashed Avesh Khan for two fours and two sixes in consecutive balls, and at that point it became clear that this was going to be a special night.

Ryan Rickelton the perfect partner – Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma was not alone in dismantling the LSG bowling. Ryan Rickelton had already been in devastating form earlier in the over, and the opening partnership the two put together was one of the most entertaining passages of play in IPL 2026. Rickelton smashed 83 off just 32 deliveries, hitting eight sixes in a display of power hitting that simply could not be matched by LSG’s bowlers.

Together, the pair put on 143 runs for the first wicket. That partnership effectively ended the game as a contest. Chasing 229, MI reached the target in 18.4 overs, winning by six wickets with eight balls to spare. It was not just the highest successful chase in Mumbai Indians’ history at the Wankhede, it was a performance of rare confidence from a team that had been struggling badly.

LSG set a big total but it was not enough

Lucknow Super Giants had put their own problems behind them briefly with the bat. Nicholas Pooran was extraordinary, blazing his way to 63 off just 21 balls to give LSG the platform they needed in the powerplay. Mitchell Marsh contributed 44 off 25 balls in the top order, and Himmat Singh and Aiden Markram put on an unbroken 68-run partnership in the death overs to take the total to 228 for 5.

On most nights, 228 is a total that wins T20 matches comfortably. But this was not most nights, and it showed once again that the Wankhede surface gives very little to the bowling side when two batters of Rohit Sharma and Rickelton’s quality are in full rhythm.

What this win means for MI

Mumbai Indians’ victory lifted spirits around a side that had been in danger of a forgettable season. It snapped a three-match losing streak and gave the dressing room something to feel genuinely good about. However, the reality of their season is that they remain in the bottom half of the table, and the path to the playoffs is extremely narrow.

Hardik Pandya was not part of the XI for this game either, which has been another storyline running through the season. The team has functioned without him at times, but his return to full fitness would clearly add significant firepower to what is already a dangerous batting lineup.

Rickelton’s season deserves wider recognition

Ryan Rickelton’s 83 against LSG moved him to sixth place on the Orange Cap table with 380 runs in eight matches. His strike rate of 190.95 is the best among MI batters this season, and his innings have been among the most entertaining in the competition. The century against SRH earlier in the season and now this match-winning 83 show that he has the range and temperament to perform under pressure.

South African cricket has produced so many wonderful batters over the years, and Rickelton is carving out a reputation for himself in the T20 format that should have IPL franchises taking very close notice at the next auction. For now, he is enjoying life with MI and giving their fans plenty to celebrate in what has otherwise been a difficult campaign.
