IPL 2026 Playoff Race Is Wide Open

IPL 2026

Five Teams, Four Spots, No Certainty

As IPL 2026 heads into its final stretch with most teams having played 10 or 11 matches, the playoff picture has never looked more unpredictable. Sunrisers Hyderabad lead the table with 14 points from 11 games, but below them, there is a logjam of teams separated by tiny margins. Punjab Kings sit second on 13 points. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans are all locked on 12 points but separated only by net run rate. Chennai Super Kings are sixth with 10 points and very much alive. The final league games could scramble all of this completely.

SRH at the Top but Not Safe

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been the season’s standout team. Heinrich Klaasen leads the Orange Cap standings with 494 runs in 11 innings, Abhishek Sharma is close behind with 475 runs, and Eshan Malinga has 16 wickets to his name. SRH won six of their last seven matches heading into this week and have the depth and the form to handle almost anything thrown at them. However, seven wins and four losses from 11 games still leaves them vulnerable. One bad run and any of the chasing pack could overtake them for the top spot and the crucial advantage that comes with being in the qualifying final rather than the elimination final.

PBKS Fall After a Perfect Start

Punjab Kings started the season in the best possible fashion, going unbeaten for the first several weeks. They were looking like genuine title contenders. But three consecutive losses have now changed the picture entirely, and they find themselves in second place but anxious rather than comfortable. Shreyas Iyer’s side have been inconsistent with both bat and ball during this slump and will need to rediscover the formula that had them running clear of the field in the first half. Their remaining fixtures and net run rate will both play a major role in where they finish.

RCB, RR, and GT in a Three-Way Battle for Third

The most dramatic situation in the table right now is the three-way tie for third to fifth place between Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans, each with 12 points. RCB have the best net run rate among the three at plus 1.234, which currently puts them in third. RR are fourth at plus 0.510. GT are fifth at minus 0.147, but their four consecutive wins mean they have the best recent form of the three. Any team that finishes in the top four is through to the knockout rounds. Miss the top four and the season is over. It could come down to the final ball of the final league match.

CSK and KKR Are Still in the Hunt

Below the top five, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are both still mathematically in contention. CSK have 10 points from 10 games and two very winnable upcoming matches against Lucknow Super Giants, currently bottom of the table. If they win both those games, they jump to 14 points and force their way into the reckoning. KKR have 9 points from 10 games and need to win their remaining matches convincingly. Their eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals thanks to Finn Allen’s maiden IPL century gave them momentum, but the gap to close is significant. They need other results to go their way as well.

DC and MI Are Essentially Done

Delhi Capitals remain on eight points after 11 games and their net run rate of minus 1.154 makes any revival extremely difficult. Mumbai Indians are ninth with six points from 10 games, while Lucknow Super Giants are bottom with four points. For these three, the season is already over in practical terms, even if elimination has not been officially confirmed. The remaining matches for DC, MI, and LSG will determine who ends up where in the bottom half of the table, but they will not be playing playoff cricket in May.

The Run-In That Could Decide Everything

The next two weeks will be defining. Every match between the top six teams is a cup final in its own right. A single loss for RCB, RR, or GT could open the door for either of the two below them. A pair of CSK wins could lift them above all three. SRH and PBKS both need to protect their positions while trying not to slip into a form crisis. The IPL 2026 playoff race is as close and unpredictable as any in recent memory, and that is exactly what makes the next ten days must-watch cricket.
