Ravi Shastri Sachin Tendulkar Sledging Story: “You Shut Up, Let Me Do The Talking” During Australia Tour
Ravi Shastri Sachin Tendulkar sledging story has gone viral after the former India captain recalled a hilarious exchange from a match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Speaking at the Summer of Cricket Lunch hosted by Cricket ACT, Shastri reminisced about the time he and a young Sachin Tendulkar faced heavy sledging from the Australian players during their first tour together.
Ravi Shastri Recalls the SCG Incident
Shastri said he had just reached a century when the Waugh brothers — Steve and Mark — started sledging Sachin, who had recently come to the crease. “They were calling him ‘you little this, you little that’,” Shastri recounted. Things escalated when Mike Whitney, who was the 12th man for Australia, joined in. Whitney reportedly threatened to hit Shastri, saying, “Get back into your crease; I’ll break your head.”
Shastri replied with a sharp retort: “Hey Mike! If you could throw as well as you can bowl, you wouldn’t be the 12th man of Australia!” The crowd at the SCG burst into laughter, diffusing the tension.
Sachin’s Response and Shastri’s Advice
After the incident, Sachin Tendulkar approached Shastri and said, “Wait till I get to my hundred. I will also give them some of this.” But Shastri advised the young prodigy otherwise. “I told Sachin, ‘You shut up. You’ve got enough class; your bat will do the talking. Let me do the talking.’”
According to Shastri, Tendulkar followed his advice, letting his batting silence the Australian sledgers. “From 100 to 200, there wasn’t a word. But at the end of the game, they were the first guys in our dressing room with a beer,” Shastri added, emphasizing the mutual respect earned through competitive cricket.
A Lesson in Sportsmanship and Respect
Shastri highlighted that while aggression and competitiveness are vital, respect remains the cornerstone of cricket. “Play it hard. Be competitive. That’s what the crowd and opposition respect,” he said. The story captures the essence of India’s fighting spirit in the early 1990s and showcases how young Sachin learned to handle pressure and sledging through experience and maturity.
Legacy of Two Icons
Ravi Shastri, who represented India from 1981 to 1992, was one of the most versatile all-rounders of his era. During the latter years of his career, a teenage Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989, eventually going on to become one of cricket’s all-time greats. Their camaraderie and mutual respect reflected the transition between generations of Indian cricket — from Shastri’s grit to Tendulkar’s grace.
This light-hearted tale not only offers a glimpse into India’s cricketing past but also highlights the humility and humor that have defined both legends.
