Pakistan Defeat Spirited Zimbabwe in T20 Tri-Series Opener
Pakistan cricket team overcame a top-order collapse to edge out Zimbabwe by five wickets in the opening match of the T20 tri-series on Tuesday. Despite a strong start from Zimbabwe, Pakistan’s spinners and middle-order batting ensured a thrilling finish, giving the team a winning start in Napier.
Zimbabwe’s Promising Start
Zimbabwe began the innings strongly with Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani putting on a 59-run opening stand. Bennett, who had an impressive qualifying campaign for the T20 World Cup with three half-centuries and a century, scored a fiery 49, hitting eight boundaries. Marumani contributed 30 runs, offering early momentum to Zimbabwe against Pakistan’s bowling attack.
However, Zimbabwe’s acceleration slowed after the introduction of Mohammad Nawaz, whose clever spin restricted runs and triggered key wickets. Fast bowler Brad Evans also played a pivotal role, picking up two wickets in one over, including the crucial dismissals of Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam, leaving Pakistan struggling at 30/3 in the powerplay.
Pakistan’s Middle-Order Revival
Pakistan’s chase looked shaky until Fakhar Zaman anchored the innings with 44 off 32 balls. He formed a crucial partnership with Usman Khan, who remained unbeaten on 37, putting together a 61-run stand to stabilize the innings. Despite a brief scare when Zaman was dismissed off Richard Ngarava, Pakistan maintained composure.
The final overs saw Pakistan needing 15 runs from 10 balls. A dropped catch by Bennett nearly swung the match in Zimbabwe’s favor, but Pakistan capitalized on the opportunity, with Zaman hitting successive boundaries to seal the victory with five wickets in hand.
