Rahul Dravid Praises Rohit Sharma’s Leadership and Vision

Rahul-Dravid

Rahul Dravid has praised Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership and openness to change during his tenure as India’s white-ball captain. Dravid, who coached India to the 2024 T20 World Cup victory under Rohit, highlighted how the captain’s approach made the coach’s job easier and strengthened team communication.

Rohit Sharma’s Leadership Style

Former India coach Rahul Dravid emphasized Rohit Sharma’s ability to lead by example. Known for his friendly rapport and approachability, Rohit encouraged his teammates to embrace changes in white-ball cricket. Dravid stated,

“When your leader stands up and says, ‘I’m the one who will do that at the cost of sometimes my so-called average and the runs that I may score’, it’s a lot easier to pass that message to teammates.”

Dravid added simply: “He showed the way.”

Driving Evolution in White-Ball Cricket

Dravid noted that Rohit quickly recognized the need for Indian cricket to evolve with the modern game. Over the last decade, the tempo of white-ball cricket shifted dramatically, with higher run rates and increased risk-taking.

“We needed to push the envelope a little bit more. We needed to take a few more risks. Run rates were going up. All of these things were going up. So, it was very easy to have that conversation with him,” said Dravid.

Rohit’s proactive approach allowed the team to adapt to these changes efficiently, ensuring India remained competitive on the global stage.

Rohit Sharma’s Batting and Adaptability

Dravid lauded Rohit’s batting, noting his ability to adjust his style to meet modern demands. He recalled Rohit’s legendary 2019 World Cup campaign, where he scored five centuries, and emphasized how the captain evolved further to meet contemporary expectations.

“He already had a phenomenal record… But that tempo needed to change,” said Dravid, highlighting Rohit’s capacity for growth and innovation.

Lessons in Coaching and Adaptation

Dravid also discussed the importance of coaches evolving with the times. Reflecting on his own coach, Keki Tarapore, he noted that techniques effective in the past might not work today.

“You just imagine, if I were to be coached by him now… and to keep the ball to the ground and not hit it in the air… that’s not going to work, right? So, you’ve got to change with the times,” Dravid explained.

He emphasized that coaching is an evolving process, and modern players like Rohit Sharma make this evolution easier by embracing new strategies and tactics.

Team Impact and Legacy

Rohit’s leadership helped build a strong team culture, where communication flowed effortlessly and players felt empowered to innovate. Dravid’s observations underline how effective captaincy goes beyond individual performance—it shapes the entire squad’s mentality.

Coach and Captain Synergy

Dravid praised Rohit’s cooperation and adaptability, noting that it simplified the coach’s role and enhanced team cohesion. Their collaboration during the 2024 T20 World Cup is a testament to the importance of synergy between coach and captain in modern cricket.
