Moeen Ali Reverses Domestic Retirement to Sign for Yorkshire Ahead of T20 Blast
Moeen Ali Sports Revokes Domestic Retirement to Sign Yorkshire Before T20 Blast. Former England allrounder Moeen Ali has surprisedly returned to English domestic cricket after confirming that he would go to play at Yorkshire in the 2022 Vitality T20 Blast. The action is a significant turnaround of his previous move to retire in the domestic cricket, a move that he made last season because of the wrangles surrounding the no objection certificate (NOC) regulations by the ECB.
Moeen Ali Returns to County Cricket at 39
Moeen will now play county cricket at the age of 39 having officially retired in international cricket in September 2024. He is also to participate in the auction of the Hundred, in addition to his Blast commitment, having failed to compete in the competition last year due to his home retirement.
Recent T20 Blast and Franchise Appearances
Moeen played eight group stage games in the T20 Blast in 2025 with Warwickshire before departing halfway to participate in franchise leagues abroad. He has played in the Global Super League and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) playing as a player of the Guyana Amazon Warriors. But he did not go to the Hundred at all, as his overseas engagements prevented him.
Domestic Retirement and ECB NOC Regulations
Moeen decided to retire to English domestic cricket to get around the new NOC regulations introduced by ECB. At this moment, circumstances have changed and he has changed his mind and will take up his Yorkshire, as the third county of his career, following his former services with Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
Moeen Ali’s Franchise Cricket Commitments
The versatile star has been very active in the international T20 franchise. During the winter, he represented a number of major leagues, such as Canada Super60, the T10 in Abu Dhabi, the ILT20, and the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). He will also have to attend the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and then join Yorkshire to play in the Blast in May.
Reunion With Adil Rashid and Jonny Bairstow
This is because the entry of Moeen into Yorkshire opens a chance of reuniting with Adil Rashid who was his fellow team-mate and good friend in the England team. Rashid is yet to participate in the T20 Blast since 2022, having continued to be contracted by Yorkshire. Moeen will also be sharing the dressing room with Jonny Bairstow who is another long time England co-worker and another World Cup winner in 2019 and so can contribute a lot of experience and leadership in the team.
Moeen Ali on Joining Yorkshire
Upon sealing the deal Moeen confirmed that he was excited to join the club and to take up a new challenge in his career at this point. He reported that the proud history of Yorkshire, future course of direction, and coaching structure were among the main considerations on his decision. He also gave a glorifying comment about Headingley which he said was one of his favourite grounds with the pitch, ambience and enthusiastic fans.
Yorkshire Squad Changes Ahead of T20 Blast
The Yorkshire are yet to win their inaugural T20 Blast trophy. Last season they ended up in the eighth position out of the nine team North Group and they have made significant changes to their team over the off-season. Dawid Malan has been stolen by Gloucestershire and Jordan Thompson by Warwickshire, but the club has reinforced in other areas by acquiring Australians Sam Whiteman and Andrew Tye as local players. Recent Asian and South African recruits Naveen-ul-Haq and Logan van Beek have also been incorporated to increase their bowling possibilities.
Yorkshire Management Welcomes Moeen Ali
The general manager of cricket at Yorkshire, Gavin Hamilton, expressed his delight to sign Moeen, saying he was a world allrounder whose influence was much more than performances. Moeen, his leadership, professionalism, and experience are the key points that Hamilton pinpointed as a young and growing T20 side.
Yorkshire’s Expectations From Moeen Ali
He further admitted that the move of Moeen to join Yorkshire is a good indicator of the good atmosphere that is being established in the club and an indicator that they are going to be regulars in the T20 Blast. Yorkshire will also be hoping that Moeen Ali will bring his talent back and enable them to set greater standards, motivate the rest of the squad and ultimately bring them to the much needed victory in English domestic T20 cricket.
