Shah Rukh Khan Inspired Andre Russell’s IPL Retirement, Reveals KKR CEO
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore has revealed that releasing Andre Russell from the franchise was actually the suggestion of team owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Russell announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on November 30 and will join KKR’s support staff as the franchise’s new “Power Coach” for the 2026 season. He will continue to play in other T20 leagues around the world while remaining associated with Knight Riders globally.
During his IPL career, Russell played 140 matches, scored 2,651 runs (including 12 fifties), and took 123 wickets, with one five-wicket haul. He made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils in 2012 before joining KKR in 2014, winning two IPL titles in 2014 and 2024. Andre Russell was also awarded IPL MVP twice (2015 and 2019).
The Decision Behind Releasing Andre Russell
Mysore explained that releasing Andre Russell, who was retained for Rs 12 crore before IPL 2025, added Rs 18 crore to KKR’s purse, giving them flexibility ahead of the December 16 auction.
“Some people missed the fundamental point, which is the [purse] deduction for us was Rs 18 crore, not Rs 12 crore by releasing Dre… A lot of money in the context of an auction was the trigger.”
He emphasized that the decision was not last-minute but part of a broader evaluation of team combinations and strategies.
Emotional Farewell for Andre Russell
Mysore described the emotional impact on Russell, who had never before been put into an auction.
“It is a strange feeling for both of us. He is very emotional but sensible. After a couple of days, it hit him how much he valued his journey with the Purple and Gold.”
Over the years, KKR supported Russell extensively, including sending him to train with a local NFL team and assisting him during his anti-doping ban in 2017. Mysore recalled:
“He always acknowledges the support and has tears in his eyes about the retention and contract decisions we made for him.”
Shah Rukh Khan’s Role in Andre Russell’s Retirement
Mysore revealed that when he shared Andre Russell’s contemplation about retirement with SRK, it was the superstar who suggested he retire.
“I could see he was agonizing over it, so when I shared this with SRK, it was actually his suggestion. A player thinks about life after cricket, and SRK helped guide Dre toward the decision.”
Russell’s retirement has freed him mentally, and Mysore noted his renewed energy on the field during ILT20 matches, where he showcased his trademark big-hitting ability and athleticism.
Appointment as KKR Power Coach
The idea of naming Russell the Power Coach was spontaneous. Mysore explained:
“It was almost a spur-of-the-moment thought. We asked, ‘What are you best known for?’ His ability to finish games, his bowling, and his athleticism made him ideal.”
Russell appreciated the new role:
“Dre said, ‘Maan, that sounds really good,’” Mysore shared, highlighting the positive reception to his transition from player to coach.
Legacy and Future
Russell’s contribution to KKR remains immense. While his retirement marks the end of an IPL chapter, his new role as Power Coach ensures he continues to influence the franchise. Mysore expressed optimism about Russell’s future with KKR and praised his professionalism, athleticism, and unique skills that made him one of the league’s most impactful all-rounders. Beyond his on-field achievements, Russell has also been a mentor to younger players, sharing insights on strategy, fitness, and mental resilience. His presence in the locker room and guidance during training sessions will likely shape the next generation of KKR talent, inspiring them to reach greater heights.
