CSK’s Injury Crisis: How Three Key Absences Are Threatening Their IPL 2026 Revival

CSK

Chennai Super Kings had just achieved something that had eluded them for exactly two years. Back-to-back wins. Two successive victories in the IPL for the first time since April 2024. The momentum felt real, the belief was returning, and then came the injury news.

Three Players Gone

Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm seamer who had been one of CSK’s most reliable performers in the early weeks of the tournament, is out for the rest of IPL 2026. A Grade 2 quadricep injury sustained in the win over Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14 requires twelve weeks to heal, ending his participation entirely. He had played in every match for CSK this season and was not simply a bowling resource but a personality in the attack.

He joins Nathan Ellis on the unavailable list. The Australian pace bowler has been sidelined for the entire season, and his replacement Spencer Johnson has not yet joined the squad due to his own fitness concerns. Two overseas fast bowlers unavailable at the same time places significant pressure on a bowling unit that is already trying to find its balance.

And then there is the matter of MS Dhoni.

The Dhoni Question

Dhoni has been working his way back from a calf injury that kept him out of the opening rounds of the tournament. CSK’s statement on the opening day of the season described his return as likely within two weeks. That timeline has long passed. He has been training with teammates, facing throwdowns, and progressing through his rehabilitation. He has not yet hit full tilt in the nets.

Every training session where Dhoni is sighted is treated as a national event. Every photograph of him holding a bat generates more discussion than most player of the match awards. The appetite for his return is enormous. The reality is that no one outside the CSK medical team knows exactly when that return will happen, or in what form it will arrive.

The Ayush Mhatre Development

Adding to the complications is the hamstring injury that has ended the season of teenage sensation Ayush Mhatre. The youngster had produced a blazing 38 off 17 balls at the top of the order against KKR, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young batting talents in the country. His absence removes not just runs but energy and intent from the top of the CSK lineup.

Three players across different departments, at different stages of their careers, all unavailable simultaneously. For any franchise, this would represent a serious problem.

How CSK Are Responding

The coaching staff under Ruturaj Gaikwad have been exploring the available replacements with careful thought. Mukesh Choudhary offers left-arm pace as a like-for-like replacement for Khaleel, while Ramakrishna Ghosh, a right-arm quick who has shown tremendous form in domestic cricket, is among the options. Ghosh claimed seven wickets for 42 runs against Himachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season, a performance that placed him firmly on the national radar.

The spin bowling resources of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein remain intact, and their combined contribution of figures of eight overs for 47 runs and four wickets against KKR showed what is possible when the conditions suit them. Anshul Kamboj continues to develop as a reliable seam bowling option.

The Bigger Picture

CSK currently hold two wins from five games, which places them in the middle of the points table but far from comfortable territory. The campaign they envisioned at the start of the season, powered by a fully fit attack that included Dhoni’s finishing abilities in the late overs, has been replaced by something more uncertain and improvised.

The talent within the squad remains significant. Sanju Samson has already contributed a century. Dewald Brevis offers explosive batting in the middle order. But the injuries have stripped away the depth that separates the best IPL squads from the merely competitive.

CSK’s revival is still possible. The wins against Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders demonstrated that the team can perform under pressure. The question that hangs over the remainder of their campaign is whether the medical staff can provide any of their missing players before the season reaches its decisive phase.
