IPL 2026 Playoff Race: Where Every Team Stands As The Final Week Begins On May 17

IPL 2026

The Race Has Never Been Tighter

With two rounds of fixtures remaining in the IPL 2026 league stage and the final four spots still very much up for grabs, May 17 begins what could be the most gripping final week the competition has seen in years. Eight teams entered the last stretch of the season with at least a theoretical path to qualification, and while some of those paths are now narrower than others, nothing has been settled yet. Sunday’s double-header in Dharamsala and Delhi will do a great deal to clarify the picture.

RCB lead the standings with 16 points from 12 matches. A win over Punjab Kings today confirms their playoff berth and could move them into the top two, giving them a crucial advantage when the knockouts begin at the end of the month. Gujarat Titans are second on 16 points with a slightly inferior net run rate, and while KKR’s win on Saturday night delayed their confirmation, they remain well-placed to qualify. Sunrisers Hyderabad are third on 14 points.

Punjab Kings At The Crossroads

Punjab sit fourth on 13 points from 12 games, but their position is precarious. Five defeats in a row have changed the conversation around them entirely. A team that once looked destined for a top-two finish is now scrambling to avoid elimination. They face RCB today and then have one final game remaining. If they lose today, their season could effectively be over, depending on other results.

Their batting average, control percentage, and strike rate have all dropped sharply across their recent losing run. The numbers do not lie. Prabhsimran Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Priyansh Arya, and Shashank Singh have all been scoring at significantly reduced rates compared to their form in the first half of the season. Rebuilding that confidence in a do-or-die fixture against the best side in the competition is a monumental challenge.

The Rajasthan and CSK Picture

Rajasthan Royals sit fifth on 12 points from 11 games. They have the advantage of a game in hand over several teams around them and a win against Delhi tonight would move them back into the top four. Captain Riyan Parag is recovering from a hamstring injury and, if fit, his return adds significant quality to their batting. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remains their most dangerous weapon, and the RR management will be hoping his explosive hitting can be the difference again tonight.

Chennai Super Kings are sixth with 12 points from 12 matches. Their loss to LSG on Friday night was a significant blow. They have two games left, against SRH at home and GT away, and need wins in both. Even then, they will need other results to go their way. The five-time champions are not out of it, but they are on the back foot and have very little margin for error.

KKR’s Heroic Effort May Not Be Enough

Kolkata Knight Riders moved to sixth equal with CSK on 12 points after their stunning win over Gujarat, but they have played 13 games to CSK’s 12 and their net run rate position makes qualification complex. They have three games remaining and need to win all three. Their batters have shown they can put up massive totals, as Saturday’s 247 proved. If Sunil Narine continues to lead their bowling and the pace support holds up, they are a dangerous side.

Matheesha Pathirana’s hamstring issue during the GT game is a concern. The Sri Lankan fast bowler only delivered eight balls in his debut appearance for KKR before leaving the field. His availability for the remaining fixtures could shape how KKR approach those matches.

What The Playoff Format Means

The top two teams after the league stage go into Qualifier 1 at HPCA Stadium on May 26, where the winner goes directly to the final. The third and fourth-placed sides face each other in the Eliminator on May 27, with the loser going home and the winner getting another chance in Qualifier 2 on May 29. The final itself takes place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31, a fitting venue for what should be a spectacular conclusion to the season.

For any team finishing in the top two, the double chance is a huge advantage. That is why RCB are playing with such urgency to confirm not just a playoff spot but a top-two position. GT are in the same frame of mind. For the sides fighting for third and fourth, every run and every wicket over the coming days will carry enormous weight. Sunday’s results will go a long way toward deciding who the final week belongs to.
