Jemimah and Debutant Nandini Shine as India Women Beat England by 38 Runs

India Women Open England Tour With a Commanding 38-Run Victory

India Women kicked off their three-match T20I series in England with an impressive 38-run win over the hosts at the County Ground in Chelmsford on Thursday evening. Playing without regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was rested for this opener, an experimental Indian side showed tremendous character to post 188 for 7 and then restrict England Women to 150 for 8 in 20 overs. The result gives India a 1-0 lead in the series and an excellent platform heading into the remaining two T20Is, which form part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.

India Survive a Terrible Start to Build a Brilliant Total

India’s innings began in the worst possible way when Lauren Bell ripped through the top order in the first over, removing Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to leave India 7 for 2.

England’s bowling had them wobbling, but their fielding handed momentum back most glaringly in a 27-run over off Issy Wong that shifted the match decisively toward India.

Yastika Bhatia, making a comeback after two years out with injury, steadied the ship. Her composed 54 off 40 balls was a maiden T20I fifty and the backbone of India’s recovery.

When momentum needed to be seized, Jemimah Rodrigues did just that. She bludgeoned 69 off 40 deliveries, taking the attack to England and collecting Player of the Match honours for a display of controlled power and timing.

What looked like a top-order collapse turned into a clinical middle-order rescue, underlining India’s depth and the value of experience returning at the right time.

A Record Partnership Transforms the Match

The stand between Bhatia and Rodrigues was the defining partnership of the innings. The two added 126 runs for the third wicket, which is now India Women’s highest ever partnership for that wicket in Women’s T20 Internationals, breaking the previous record of 117 set by Veda Krishnamurthy and Rodrigues. The partnership came off just 75 balls and completely changed the complexion of the match from a precarious 7 for 2 to a platform from which India could push towards a 200-plus total. Deepti Sharma then chipped in with a brisk 22 off 13 balls at the death, along with Arundhati Reddy, to push India past 185 and into an unassailable position.

Debutant Nandini Sharma Grabs the Spotlight

If Rodrigues provided the batting fireworks, it was debutant seamer Nandini Sharma who stole the show in England’s chase. The pacer had a dream international debut, picking up three wickets in the space of just five deliveries to derail England’s middle order and at one stage find herself on a hat-trick. She finished with 3 for 34, making an immediate and powerful impression on the international stage. Amy Jones showed fight with a half-century from the unfamiliar position of number three, and Maia Bouchier gave England some early momentum, but there was never enough partnership building to make the total manageable. Deepti Sharma and the rest of India’s bowling attack maintained pressure throughout to seal a comprehensive win.

Perfect World Cup Warm-Up for a Young Indian Side

With the Women’s T20 World Cup approaching, this victory carries more significance than just a series lead. India fielded several players who are expected to feature prominently in the World Cup squad and used this match as an opportunity to build combinations and test new talent. The emergence of Nandini Sharma as a genuine wicket-taking option adds depth to India’s bowling resources. Head coach and team management will be particularly pleased with the side’s ability to recover from a crisis start and produce a match-winning performance. The second T20I, where Danni Wyatt-Hodge is set to return from maternity leave, promises to be another competitive contest.
