MS Dhoni Nears Return: Positive Signs for CSK vs Delhi Capitals

Dhoni

The question hanging over Chennai Super Kings IPL 2026 campaign is not primarily tactical or strategic. It is medical. When will MS Dhoni return? And until he does, can a side built so significantly around his presence and personality find a way to compete?

Those questions grew louder this week after CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed what many had feared: the 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter remains some distance from match fitness and is almost certain to miss Saturday’s home fixture against Delhi Capitals at Chepauk. His availability for the subsequent match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the same ground on April 14 is also in serious doubt.

The Injury and the Timeline

Dhoni has been managing a calf muscle strain that forced him to skip the team’s opening two away fixtures. He was absent for the clash against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30 and the defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Bengaluru on April 5. He also missed CSK’s home game against Punjab Kings at Chepauk, fuelling further concern.

Viswanathan, speaking to reporters, offered no comfort to anxious fans hoping for a swift return. “”MS is undergoing rehab, and it will take some time. We can’t say how much time,”” the CEO said, confirming that the franchise is working without a fixed return date and is monitoring Dhoni’s progress cautiously. While Dhoni has resumed light batting practice at the nets and continues to work closely with the team’s physio and support staff, he is described as nowhere near match-ready.

The management has made clear that Dhoni will not be hurried back. His long-term fitness – and, implicitly, his ability to feature meaningfully in what may be his final IPL campaign – is being prioritised over short-term results.

A Crisis at the Wrong Moment

Dhoni’s absence has coincided with one of CSK’s worst starts to any IPL season. The five-time champions are winless after three matches, sitting at the bottom of the points table. The only time CSK opened a campaign more poorly was in 2022, when they lost four in a row.

The problems are tangible and statistical. CSK’s death-over bowling economy rate stands at 16.65, the worst among all ten franchises. The batting has lacked the composure and authority that Dhoni historically provides, with a low scoring rate in the powerplay creating pressure that the middle order has been unable to absorb. There have been moments of genuine quality – Sanju Samson, acquired in the blockbuster three-way trade that also brought Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals, has shown glimpses. But the absence of Dhoni’s tactical clarity, his reading of the game from behind the stumps, his authority in managing bowlers and setting fields, is felt in every close contest.

The match against Punjab Kings at Chepauk illustrated the gap precisely. Without Dhoni to marshal the bowling and maintain composure in the crunch overs, CSK appeared disorganised in moments that previously they would have navigated comfortably. The team that has historically been synonymous with smart cricket and late-innings resilience has looked uncertain.

What Dhoni Means to CSK

It is worth being clear-eyed about what Dhoni contributes to CSK in 2026. He is no longer the franchise’s primary run-scorer. At 44, his role as a finisher is more situational, his batting reserved for genuinely necessary moments rather than default deployments. But his value has never been reducible to runs and strike rate.

Dhoni is CSK’s tactical brain. He reads the game more clearly than anyone else on the field. He knows which bowler to use in what moment, which field setting to apply against which batter. He handles pressure with a stillness that younger players visibly feed off. When Dhoni is behind the stumps, the team operates differently – more confidently, more collectively.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Heinrich Klaasen, offering an outsider’s perspective, suggested that CSK’s squad depth meant Dhoni’s absence was not fatal. “”CSK has got an incredible IPL record,”” Klaasen noted. “”Even with Dhoni not being there, they are not much of a lesser side.”” That may be technically accurate. But it misses the intangible, the leadership architecture that Dhoni provides and that no squad depth can fully replicate.

The Road Ahead

CSK’s upcoming fixtures – Delhi Capitals on April 11, Kolkata Knight Riders on April 14 – are ones they need to win if their campaign is to avoid an early unravelling. The franchise is expected to reassess Dhoni’s fitness after these two games, with insiders cautiously pointing toward the KKR fixture as a possible return window if his recovery progresses well.

For now, CSK fans must wait and hope. A side that has always found a way under pressure is being tested without its most pressure-resistant figure. The comeback, when it comes, will be one of the season’s most anticipated moments.
