IPL 2025 Qualifier 2: Punjab Kings Secure Thrilling Win

IPL 2025 Qualifier 2

IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 saw Punjab Kings (PBKS) defy expectations, defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) after MI had previously maintained an undefeated record when scoring over 200 runs in their 18-season history. Punjab’s victory propels them into the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), marking their first final appearance since 2014 and guaranteeing a new IPL champion for the first time since 2016.

Punjab Kings Secure Victory in IPL 2025 Qualifier 2

PBKS won the toss and, mirroring their previous encounter, chose to field first. An unexpected rain delay paused the game for over two hours. A rule adjustment this year allowed playoff games to extend two hours past the original time, which proved beneficial, allowing fans to witness the entire thrilling match.

Despite the rain delay, MI started confidently. Although they lost Rohit Sharma early, Johnny Bairstow and Tilak Verma propelled them to a strong powerplay finish at 65/1. Bairstow’s dismissal shortly after the powerplay didn’t deter MI, as Surya continued his excellent form, partnering with Tilak for another 50-run partnership.

At 142/2 in the 14th over, MI looked set for a target around 220, but PBKS responded with two quick wickets, dismissing both set batsmen for identical scores of 44. Chahal removed Surya, followed by Jamieson dismissing Tilak. These quick wickets slowed MI’s momentum, and despite Naman Dir’s quickfire 37 off 18 balls, MI only managed 203/6. Considering their position at 102/2 at the innings’ halfway point, MI likely felt they underperformed. Omarzai led PBKS’ bowling attack with 2/43, while Chahal, Jamieson, Stoinis, and Vyshak each took one wicket.

PBKS vs MI Highlights: Chasing the Target

PBKS’s chase mirrored MI’s innings in its flow. Prabhsimran fell early for 6, but Priyansh and Inglis played aggressively, pushing the score past 50 in the fifth over. Inglis aggressively targeted Bumrah, scoring 20 runs off his first over. MI then introduced Ashwani Kumar as an impact sub, who immediately dismissed Arya for 20 in the final over of the powerplay.

Inglis maintained his aggressive approach, while captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings. MI captain Hardik Pandya brought himself into the attack and claimed the crucial wicket of Inglis for 38. At 72/3, MI appeared to have regained control. Nehal Wadhera launched a counterattack against his former team, taking on Santner and Hardik, aided by a costly dropped catch by Boult. The score at the end of 10 overs was 98/3, closely aligned with MI’s position at the same stage.

Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera formed an 84-run partnership, the most substantial of the match. Shreyas, with three consecutive sixes against Reece Topley, maintained the required pace, slightly outpacing Nehal. Ashwani Kumar struck again, dismissing Nehal after his valuable 48-run contribution. With 48 runs needed off 26 balls, the strategic timeout provided a break for both teams.

Hardik’s runout of Shashank momentarily shifted the momentum back towards MI. However, Shreyas, having reached his half-century, remained composed, even against a challenging spell from Bumrah, who finished with 0/40.

Shreyas Iyer’s Heroics Seal the Deal

With 23 runs required from the final 12 balls, Shreyas unleashed an aggressive assault in the 19th over, hitting four sixes off Ashwani, ultimately finishing with eight sixes in his unbeaten innings of 87 off 41 balls. PBKS concluded with 207/5.

Punjab Kings IPL Final: Awaits RCB

This victory should instill confidence in PBKS as they prepare for the final against RCB. They will aim to overcome their previous one-sided defeat and anticipate a competitive match on Tuesday. The IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 will be remembered for Shreyas Iyer’s batting masterclass.
